INSTITUTE OF ORIENTAL STUDIES OF NAS RA

In accordance with Order N141-A, dated May 3, 2024, issued by the Chairman of the Committee of Higher Education and Science (CHES), and for the purpose of conducting monitoring of the programs and projects implemented in 2024 through basic and thematic funding, a working group from CHES visited the Institute of Oriental Studies of the National Academy of Sciences of Armenia on September 17 of this year.

The working group included:

– Karen Gharibyan, Deputy Secretary General of CHES and head of the delegation,

– Naira Sukiasyan, Head of the Unit for Policy and Development Programs of the Department for Higher Education and Science Policy of CHES,

– Shushanik Aghabekyan, Chief Specialist of the Research Programs Division of the Program Implementation Department of CHES,

– Hamo Sukiasyan, Senior Researcher at the Modern History Department of the Institute of History of the NAS RA,

– Shushan Khachatryan, Head of the Documentation and Research Department of Victims and Survivors of the Armenian Genocide at the Armenian Genocide Museum-Institute.

Acting Director of the Institute of Oriental Studies, PhD in History, Associate Professor Gohar Iskandaryan, presented the basic and thematic programs currently being implemented at the Institute, as well as the computer equipment, devices, and valuable books acquired within the framework of these programs (all inventory codes were properly documented and available).

Gohar Iskandaryan emphasized the Institute's newly adopted approach to the publication of books and collections. According to this new policy, before a work is submitted for review by the Academic Council, it must first undergo external expert evaluation. This measure aims to enhance the overall quality of scholarly output.

The working group conducted a tour of the Institute to become acquainted on-site with the research processes carried out by the heads of the thematic programs.

During the tour, the equipment acquired within the framework of the thematic and basic programs was presented in various divisions of the Institute, including two scanners for the digitization of the Institute’s library, laptops and printers, as well as newly acquired books. As scientific output, already published works were also presented.

All questions raised during the CHES working group’s visit received appropriate and comprehensive answers. The representatives of the working group expressed their hope that the Institute’s researchers will continue to actively apply for new thematic programs offered by the Committee, which not only support the development of scientific potential but also contribute to the improvement of infrastructural and working conditions.
