The department of Arab countries is one of the important and strategic divisions of the Institute of Oriental Studies, NAS RA. The main research areas of the Department are the examination of political and social-economic developments of different Arab countries (such are Syria, Egypt, Lebanon, Gulf Arab countries, Arab countries of North Africa, etc.). The research interests of the Department include also the study of inter-Arab relations which are very important component of international relations, Arab countries-regional states (Iran, Turkey) and Arab countries-global players relations, as well as the transformations currently going on in the MENA region.
The various manifestations of Islamic fundamentalism, the activities of different Islamic radical groups, security issues related to terrorism, as well as the activities of various Arab-Islamic organizations, such as the League of Arab States, the Organization of Islamic Cooperation and etc., are also in the list of department’s research interests.
The research fellows of department examine the Armenian communities of different Arab countries, the peculiarities of their formation, the challenges and problems facing the communities in the Arab world in transition as well as the features of Armenia-Arab countries’ relations.
One of the most important strategic goals of the Department is the development of established scientific and academic traditions, effective management, promotion and internationalization of the Arabic studies, as well as the expansion of scientific and applied research in the field of regional studies. We develop knowledge networks with constructive impact at local, national, regional, and international levels.
